How to feel natural on camera in an online interview
Check your framing and light before the call. During the interview, speak toward the lens without sitting rigidly.
In an online interview, the person you are speaking to appears on your screen, but the lens is where they see your gaze. Take a minute to check the frame and light before the conversation starts.
Start with the camera preview
Open the camera preview before joining. Face the camera, center your head, and keep your shoulders in view. Position the lens near eye level if you can. Settle into a comfortable position and check that you still fit in the frame.
Look at your face in the preview. If it appears dark, put more light in front of you. If it appears too bright, soften the light or move away from it.
Look toward the lens when you answer
The interviewer’s face may be on your screen, but they see the image from your camera. Looking toward the lens while you answer gives them the sense that you are speaking to them. Check the screen when you need to, then return to the lens as you talk.
Move naturally and stay in frame
Keep roughly the same position while you speak so you do not drift out of the shot. You can still gesture, smile, and nod. Once the camera is set, focus on showing who you are and what you can do.
